Solid Wells

RSI has the richest suite of rocks physics tools available in the industry for reservoir characterization.

When combined with the knowledge of our multi-disciplinary team of scientists who specialize in integrating rock properties with seismic and CSEM data, clients have a unique resource with which to understand their prospects and reservoirs.

Solid Wells, our carefully designed well log analysis and rock physics modeling workflow, is designed to understand lithology and fluid properties from the surface to target depth, and link these to the observed geophysical response. This means we take extraordinary care to correctly understand the log data through shales, across drilling breaks, casing points and washouts.

Working with both the needs of the client and the characteristics of the data, we analyze and where necessary correct the data before it is used in a reservoir characterization study. Typically, we will de-spike and filter data to remove or correct anomalous data points; normalize logs to determine appropriate ranges and cutoffs for porosity, clay content, and water resistivity; calibrate volumetric curves to core data, if available; correct sonic and density logs for mud filtrate invasion, if needed; and compute Vs if required.

We then conduct rock physics diagnostics to find the rock physics model that best explains the well and core data available; this model can also help us understand the behavior of reservoir and non-reservoir zones. Our rock physics modeling can incorporate both isotropic and anisotropic parameters as required, while linking elastic and electric measurements directly to rock and fluid properties. The resulting model allows prediction of seismic or electromagnetic properties away from the wellbore, informing seismic inversion and electromagnetic data analysis. Importantly, our clients receive a detailed analysis of every step we have taken, the parameters employed, and every assumption made in the analysis.

In a world where clients are trying to extract the most information from available data, our team provides a holistic, clear analysis of the data that can be used to test feasibility or sensitivities in our fully customizable workflow. This fully conditioned and analyzed data can be integrated reliably with seismic or electromagnetic data to achieve a thorough understanding of the lithology and fluid properties of the reservoir.

Solid reservoir characterization begins with thorough well log analysis. If you get the rocks and rock physics wrong, you get the characterization wrong. We don’t. We’re Rock Solid.

Well Log Conditioning

At RSI, integration is at the heart of the services we offer and our well log analysis differs in several important ways from standard log analysis. In our geophysical well log analysis, well logs form the basis for relating elastic and electric properties to the reservoir. While we focus on producing intervals, we also seek information about all of the section through which the seismic or electromagnetic energy has passed. Therefore our zone of interest is much larger, encompassing everything from the surface to target depth and beneath.

This means we have to take great care to correctly treat the log data through overburden, across gaps or discontinuities in drilling data, casing points, and washouts. In all cases the log data will be conditioned, pre-processed, and normalized before they can be used in a reservoir study.

In wells where important log data is missing, we reconstruct the logs synthetically through application of modern rock physics principles or neural network technology.

Rock Physics Diagnostics

RSI uses rock-physics diagnostic analysis to describe the functional relationship between properties measured with geophysical data (such as velocity and resistivity) and the underlying rock and fluid properties (such as porosity, mineralogy and saturation), in a way that is consistent with local geology. Rock physics diagnostics help illuminate the geophysical behavior of the reservoir zones, and allow any problems encountered in the well log data to be corrected. Rock Physics Diagnostic analysis enables reliable modeling and perturbation of elastic or electric properties with changes in reservoir properties.

Rock Physics Modeling

At RSI, one of our core concerns is to find an integrated Rock Physics Model that is consistent with the well and core data available, and that explains the behavior of the reservoir and non-reservoir zones.

Our modeling process, which incorporates both isotropic and anisotropic properties, links elastic and electric measurements directly to rock and fluid properties via the world’s most comprehensive database of rock physics relationships, and data driven models.

We use Rock Physics Modeling to derive reliable models that correlate the changes of elastic or electric properties with perturbations in reservoir properties. This provides a sound foundation for our understanding of the geophysical response so that the reservoir and encasing sediments can be properly characterized.

iMOSS®

RSI’s interactive, rock physics and geophysical modeling application (iMOSS) is a powerful and sophisticated tool for reservoir rock physics analysis. It enables interpreters, modelers, and others geoscientists to control an array of parameters so that they may understand the underlying rock and fluid controls on seismic amplitude, impedance, AVA response and CSEM sensitivity.

iMOSS not only enables users to characterize and model a range of sediment/rock types, but also to calculate models to better understand how the seismic or CSEM signature changes with different rock properties. In addition, it enables users to build background and target models from imported well logs and conduct isotropic/anisotropic sensitivity studies.
